Music Muse Monday: Who says: (Whomi Remix) Artist Fink

Fink

Fink

Music Artist

Here’s a little potted history of Fink, from 2006 ‘til today. Some might see it differently, this is how we remember it…

BISCUITS FOR BREAKFAST – I guess this current incarnation of Fink all started when Guy said he was up for playing bass on a few tracks (“So Long” on Biscuits For Breakfast being the first I think) and Tim, over beers at a pub in Hampstead, was persuaded to play drums on a few (his first probably being the title track “Biscuits”). Then Ninja Tune released Biscuits in 2006, the track “Pretty Little Thing” kinda struck a chord out there for some reason. So we toured, and toured and toured, learning and playing, playing and learning… We packed a tent at Lowlands festival in Holland, we sold out La Maroquinerie in Paris and Joe’s Pub in New York City, we played from the USA to Poland and everywhere in-between.

DISTANCE AND TIME – When we were through learning what a soundcheck was, we wrote Distance And Time in 2007. It has some really solid tracks we think: “Blueberry Pancakes”, “If Only” (which opened the doors to me working with John Legend on his Evolver album), and particularly “This Is The Thing”, which got a lot of syncs, and pretty much paid for our learning curve. We kinda turned to Europe big time as the UK was ignoring us a little… Radio 1 was great, and hearing “Blueberry” on Zane’s show was an amazing feeling, but the press didn’t want to know… So we toured Europe and the USA, and loved it, so we toured it again… supporting Camille and Massive Attack, playing huge amphitheatres and everywhere from LA to Cape Town, the Albert Hall to Carnegie Hall… it was awesome…

SORT OF REVOLUTION – We stopped touring Distance and went straight into the studio. Well, I say studio, but we wanted to take it somewhere else… somewhere maybe more intimate…we thought we’d learnt a lot from Andy Barlow, the producer of Distance, and kinda wanted to implement some of it in our own place… so we converted my apartment into a recording studio-cum-storage ground cum- lad pad, and after several visits and threats of fines from Brighton Council, and an official anti-social behaviour notice, we delivered Sort Of Revolution in 2009, the tricky third set. I think it was probably the bassline to the title track that pushed my neighbours over the edge… We loved dub and hadn’t really represented that on previous outings so we nailed “Sort Of Revolution” and “Q&A” – the former gaining us our first KCRW session in LA, the second our first BBC Maida Vale session for Giles Peterson (perhaps the last DJ on Radio 1 we expected to like our stuff). This record saw us really start to play bigger, and after all the TV stuff the fame game was beginning to kick in, which was and still is a little weird… We really did tour the shit out of this album, including a mind-bending China tour, finishing up in Australia with one of our fave gigs ever I think, at The Corner Hotel in Melbourne….

PERFECT DARKNESS – So we took a little hiatus: a bit of writing time, put our lives back together a little bit… During all of the above Timmy wrote a few books (available now on Random House: they’re about bands… lots of famous musos from the 90’s love ‘em). We recorded a couple of Sideshow albums for Aus Music, and I wrote a load of songs for other people. Then we travelled to Los Angeles in November 2010 for a blitzkrieg recording session in Steakhouse studios with Billy Bush. We had 8 tracks written and roughly planned out, plus two to do on the ground once there… y’know, kinda soak up the atmosphere as well as the Mexican junk food… We nailed the whole record from start to finish in 16 days – a feat that I think surprised the producer as much as us… we wanted to nail some hardcore blues (“Wheels”) and some big tracks (“Fear Is Like Fire”) as well as a stringy epic (“Perfect Darkness”). It came out in June 2011, and if we thought we’d toured a lot before, we were in for a surprise… eighteen months practically without let-up, taking us to new places (Oslo, Lisbon, San Diego, Mumbai), and old places but in a totally different way, like Amsterdam, this time playing Queen’s Night with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, where our stuff was scored by Jules Buckley. We released the evidence as a live album, and the whole touring period was captured on yet another live album (Wheels Turn Beneath My Feet), and after a final bash supporting the Stones at Hyde Park, we hung up our touring trousers for a while…

HARD BELIEVER – During our little break, “Warm Shadow” got released as a single after it was featured in the hit TV show The Walking Dead. It’s proved arguably the most popular thing we’ve had out there, and gave us even more evidence that people kinda like the weirder, more experimental side of Fink. So that, coupled with the orchestral experience, showed us the way to go… we met up in a few different locations (London, Amsterdam, LA, Brighton… even when you’re not touring you still feel like touring) and jammed about 20 or 30 new tunes, which got whittled down to 12, which then got whittled down to 8… so we booked another Billy Bush mission to LA, this time Sound Factory studios, full of confidence that we’d nail another couple of bangers in situ. And it worked – we basically had the busiest, hardest, most inspiring, enjoyable and intense 17 days, mainlining the coffee, performing to the mics, layering it up, trying new things out, throwing stuff away and writing new bits… (we even went easy on the Mexican junk food in favour of a few “chopped and tossed” salads)… and to our ears is was sounding pretty damn good… we premiered one of the newies “Shakespeare” on Maz from Communion’s XFM show in Jan 2014… then “Looking Too Closely” and title track “Hard Believer” hit the airwaves a few months later, very gratifyingly played on many radio stations all the way from Berlin to Los Angeles… the album emerged in July so we celebrated by playing 96 gigs across Europe and North America with our friends and musical partners Chris Nicholls (guitar) and Rubeb Hein (piano)… when the tour finished, Fin settled down to make an “alternative version” of the album using some of the more atmospheric sounds on the record, which emerged as Horizontalism in May 2015…

For those who’ve read my Shadow Unit Series, ya’ll know this song was listened to over and over again for Burned In Shadows. Royce, Belinda, and Ronin’s books. Well, here is another version of the song and its AH-MAZ-ING! I’d also like to point out, that I can’t wait to get back to the dynamic trio. I start work on INFERIS in 2018 and can’t wait for everyone to fall in love all over again with this triad. They hold a special spot in my heart! I can’t wait to bring you little sneak peeks into their troubled, yet exciting life! If you read The Black Prince you know that Royce has gotten himself into a bit of pickle! I hope you enjoy this song as much as I do! I love every song that this artist has ever written or played. I am a devout FINK follower! Be sure to look him up, he’s well worth it!

About the Author

olivia hardin pic b&w.jpg

When Olivia Hardin began having strange movie-like dreams in her teens, she had no choice but to begin putting them to paper. Before long the writing bug had her and she knew she wanted to be a published author. Several rejections plus a little bit of life later, and she was temporarily “cured” of the urge to write. That is until she met a group of talented and fabulous writers who gave her the direction and encouragement she needed to get lost in the words again.

Olivia’s attended three different universities over the years and toyed with majors in Computer Technology, English, History and Geology. Then one day she heard the term road scholar and she knew that was what she wanted to be. Now she “studies” anything and everything just for the joy of learning. She’s also an insatiable crafter who only completes about 1 out of 5 projects, a jogger who hates to run, and she’s sometimes accused of being artistic.

A native Texas girl, Olivia lives in the beautiful Lone Star state with her husband, Danny and their puppy, Bonnie.

Music Muse Monday

I played this song over and over again, one afternoon while writing Dire Cravings, and even while writing, Yuri, from 2 Nights with you. I downloaded everything from this composer and was floored. I couldn’t stop listening. I was moved, and elated. Have you ever listened to piece of music that had the hairs on the back of your neck rising? Something that’s given you chills each time you’ve turned it on. His music is powerful, and he’s been added to my list of things I must see before I pass on to my next adventure! I hope you enjoy this piece as much as I do. Every single song he’s written that I could get my hands on, has not been a disappointment at all!

LOOK AWAY by Jo Holatte

Excerpt from the chapter titled,

“A Manvel Ghost Story; Who’s There”

POUND POUND POUND POUND POUND POUND.

I jump at the noise. Two fists are now beating on the doorway. Back and forth, back and forth, non-stop. I can see my side of the bathroom door moving from the beating it was receiving from the other side. My raging anger keeps me distracted as the door continues to be beat upon from the hallway. I unlock the knob by turning the old skeleton key. The hitting on the wood from the front side is relentless and I am more than ready to unleash my wrath upon one of my roommates.

I open the door just as it jerked toward me from one last hard knock against it. I let go of the doorknob as it swings open toward me. I am expecting to see Joe or Aaron standing two feet in front of me but…

The hallway is empty.

No one is here.

The hallway is empty.

Nobody is here.

Somebody is here.

I heard them.

I felt them banging on the door.

Somebody must be here.

Oh my God…

The razor-sharp silence of the empty house slices its way through me, only to be replaced with the swooshing sound in my ears produced by my heart straining, flopping within my rib cage and pumping harder than it was designed to endure. I clutch at my chest.

I think I’m having a heart attack.

Ice cold air envelops all around me.

It’s on me.

It’s touching me.

I scream.

The kind of scream that could make my throat bleed.

Power of Love Snippet by Anne Conley.

Nick sauntered over to Linc, slinging a towel over his shoulder. He had just moved into town and bought the bar a year ago, having come up from Austin. It was a nice place, and Linc hoped it stayed nice. Things in this town seemed to tarnish with time.

“Hey, man. Sorry I didn’t come say hi earlier. I’m short-handed and needed to finish setups.” Nick extended a hand, and they shook. Nick was Linc’s only real friend in this town—besides his sister and dad—and all Nick had to do was ask and Linc would do anything for him. That’s how much he appreciated the friendship. Not many people here knew his past and accepted him anyway.

“Not a big deal. I just came by to tell you I finally got a job, and it looks like it’s going to be a good one.”

“Yeah? Big money?” Nick’s eyebrows raised with interest.

“Not really, but it will be enough, and it’s gonna last a while.”

Nick’s smile of congratulations burst into one of glee when he spied the new book. “What in the ever-loving fuck is that on my bar?”

Linc sighed, knowing he was about to get some serious shit. “I was giving her a hard time about being in Samantha’s book group, and she insisted I read this.”

“It’s a ‘she’?” His eyebrows crunched together spoke volumes.

“Yeah.” He spun the dwindling bottle of beer on the bar top, avoiding Nick’s gaze.

“You gonna get to know her?” The question was suggestive, and he actually gave it some thought. Linc wanted to, but it was a purely physical instinct. He didn’t really know Vanessa Power, except she was gorgeous, nice, out of her mind for buying that house, and had given him a job where most of the town wouldn’t.

And she made the itchy feeling go away.

He already knew how she felt when he held her limp body in his arms, feeling her breath against his neck. He knew she smelled like coconuts, even when she hadn’t showered. He knew her sheets were a light green and he knew what her pillow smelled like. He knew she was ridiculously excited to learn how to use the generator, and he knew she was a total badass for sleeping in that creepy-ass house by herself.

The truth was, he’d seen the heat in her eyes as they crawled across his body. He knew she wanted him; it was impossible not to see it. But for how long? They’d hook up, and then she’d realize he’s an ex-con—a killer—and wouldn’t want him, just like everyone else in this fucking town. And he needed this job. Bad. If they were ex-hookups, she’d fire him and find someone else to work for her. Someone else to work on the old Evans place. Someone who might just wreck it all. Again, he had no idea why he cared, but he did. He wanted to be the one to fix that house up. For her.

“Nope. I’m going to work for her. It’s a really long fix-up job on the old Evans place, and I don’t want to fuck anything up. This job’s important, man.”

Late Night: Did You Know

Late Night: Did You Know

It’s late and I’m up researching for a story I have yet to start yet. But when it hits, it hits. I’ve gotten better at putting items in the vault, but only after I grab the piece in my head. Otherwise, I’ll totally forget it. Then I set a reminder for the vault to pop back up in three months. It’s how I decide what new project I want to infuse into my other continuing projects.

Tonight I was interested in Cuneiform.

Did you know, cuneiform is not a language? It’s made up of 600-1000 characters to write words. (Source) History Extra. You can see the full post here. Cuneiform is made of up two languages, Sumerian and Akkadian. I’d always thought it was a language, but it’s not. It’s a writing system. GO FIGURE!

Alphas of Summer Excerpt: Dragon’s Curvy Dilemma

Mychal Daniels

Mychal Daniels

Author

Paranormal, Sci-Fi and Fantasy Romance Writer Creating One Book Boyfriend at a Time

That was the cue Asher needed to break up this tea party. Bounding into the doorway with the metal ball still in one hand, he said in his best, deep voice, “What’s going on in here and who are you?”

The young woman that stood before him wasn’t what he was expecting. She jumped, dropping the dishes onto the counter. First, she was… black. The voice had thrown him a little. Next, she was very attractive in a raw, real, honest, primal kind of way. Wait was that the right thing to think? He was a self-proclaimed feminist and lover of all types of people. Was it wrong to use those words to describe her? She was different, not what he’d expected with how she’d spoken with Brock, that’s all.

Liar.

His dick twitched to punctuate the conviction of this truth. The sight of the young, beautiful woman had instantly turned him on. Unlike Monique, who was fifteen years older and had always had a sisterly vibe over him; Daryl hit him in the gut with want and need—to have her. And she wasn’t even trying!

Shit—just want he needed, a woman who could make his plans for a quiet summer very difficult if he spent any amount of time with her. Desire to have her was quick to the forefront, pushing reason and logic down and out. He wanted this woman. She was like no one he’d ever been attracted to before. And there was something about the set of her smile and demeanor that said she wouldn’t fall for his charm easily. That was enough for his dragon to stir and press against his skin.

Down boy.

He had to stay cool and not get sidetracked by lust. In the time it took to take a breath and quick beat to regroup, he scanned her body from head to toe. Natural beauty assailed his senses and completely woke up his dragon. She was perfection. Habit was the only safety that had him guarding against flirting, but it was a challenge.

Asher had been around enough women to know when they had help looking as good as they did. This woman had been under no one’s surgical knife, wore no makeup, and her curly hair was in neat, thick plaits, sort of how a little girl would wear them. As for her pajamas, they were a tank and booty shorts that drove him crazy. They hugged her body in all the right ways. From the fullness of breasts that weighed the front of the tank top sleepwear down to the stretching of the sleepwear boxers that clung to shapely hips and ass for days, to the thick thighs that tapered down into smooth brown toned and well-proportioned legs, she was sexy as fuck.

Instantaneous flashes of those legs tightly wrapped around his hips as he dove into her hot full body rocketed through his mind, sending signals to his dick to advance. It made total sense why his kid was into her. He ached to readjust himself with how fast he’d gotten hard. Instinct had him moving the metal ball to cover his groin area with how his body reacted to hers.

It took less than a minute for her to zone in on the metal ball he held in front of his growing hard on.

Alphas of Summer Excerpt: Dragon’s Desire by J.D. Monroe

Alphas of Summer Excerpt: Dragon’s Desire by J.D. Monroe

J.D. Monroe

J.D. Monroe

Author

J.D. Monroe is a Georgia-based author with a love for all things paranormal, magical, and downright fantastical. She has not given up on the dream of riding a dragon someday.

(Let’s take on the first person, shall we? There are few things as awkward as writing about yourself in the third person!)

I’ve dreamed of being a writer since I was little, with early literary gems such The Three Fish. However, it wasn’t until college that I started to think about writing seriously, and by that I mean writing endless plot ideas and devouring every book on writing I could get my hands on. (Please note that very little actual writing occurred in this stage.)

It was another few years before I realized that thinking about writing was not actual writing. My first completed novel – which will never see the light of day – was a NaNoWriMo project in 2006, which spawned the realization that I was, in fact, capable of writing a book that was moderately readable. I’ve been hooked ever since.

If I’m not writing my own books, you might find me curled up in a chair reading the latest from Stephen King, Ilona Andrews, Rob Thurman, or Chuck Wendig. Or you might just find me asleep with the cutest little cat you ever saw pretending he doesn’t like me while simultaneously occupying the same room I’m in for 80% of the day.

Sometime after the third solid punch to his ribs, Pahlin Stormcaller realized he had made a colossal mistake in coming here. He had barely conjured a memory of home—the sweeping vista of fire-orange rock and the glittering stone spires of Arvelor—when a fist slammed into his jaw and knocked him backward. Reality converged on him again as the gathered crowd roared their support for his opponent. Pain bloomed in his face as he tried to focus. Quite literally, since the blow to his head left his vision blurry and the world tilting dangerously to the side.

The Back Porch was having a slow night, but even if it had been packed for a Dollar Draft night, Violet Ray would have noticed the two hotties strolling through the front door of her bar. She could have picked those faces out of a Super Bowl crowd. They were big boys, tall and broad-shouldered like Swedish-imported hockey players. And they were both handsome, with cheekbones and jaws carved from granite, and skin painted with the perfect sun-kissed copper shade. One had a well-groomed goatee, while his companion was clean-shaven. In the neon light of the Jägermeister sign by the door, she could see a dark welt on the clean-shaven one’s jaw. They were quite a pair, though by their body language she’d guess they weren’t a couple. A girl could certainly hope.

Two women in the booth closest to the door gaped as the men passed.

“Same here, girls,” Violet muttered.

Longer Snippets

Her attentiveness wasn’t entirely because they were attractive. She wanted to place their accents. While she was no linguistic expert, she could pick out a few of the more common ones, and this one wasn’t ringing any bells.

“You want another?” she said as she approached. The clean-shaven one had only drunk about half of his beer. He winced, then forced a smile. “Or something else?”

“What are those?” the one with the goatee asked, gesturing toward the customer with the Fireball shots.

“That? That’s Fireball,” she said.

“Fireball,” the clean-shaven one said slowly. “Is it good?”

“If you like to not feel your face,” she said. His hand drifted to his jaw. “You want to try it?”

“Sure,” the goateed one said. “How much?”

“This one’s on the house,” she said. She pulled out three shot glasses and lined them up, then poured a generous shot of the cinnamon whiskey into each. Before pushing them across the bar, she said, “I don’t drink with strangers. I’m Violet. And you are?”

“I’m Eric,” the one with the goatee said. “And this is my friend Paul.”

“Nice to meet you,” she said. “Where are you from? I’ve been trying to place your accent.”

Paul’s eyes widened slightly. “Not from here.”

“Yeah, I got that,” she said playfully.

“Eastern Europe,” Eric said quickly. There was a weird expression on Paul’s face, almost like relief. His constant deference to Eric was strange, but it could have just been a language thing. If he didn’t speak great English, then he might be relying heavily on his friend to help out. Still, it was weird that he didn’t name a specific country. Maybe they thought she was too dumb to recognize it. Whatever. They were cute and maybe the Fireball would loosen them up to give good tips. She wasn’t going to pry.

She smiled. The soft pink color painted on her lips distracted him, drawing his eye to the full curve of her lower lip. “Been in any fights lately?”

He laughed. “Not in a few days.”

“Your face looks much better,” she said. “What are you drinking?”

He paused. “Not whatever you gave me the other night. I was very ill.”

“You were sick?”

“A headache,” he said. What was the word Ariv had used? “I was hungover.”

She grinned. “To be fair, you drank a lot of it. That much of anything will give you a hangover. Give me a minute.” She spun around, sending her glossy hair flying. As she reached for bottles on the backlit shelves, he had a fine view of her figure. There was a lovely curve to her shape. It awakened an almost compulsive desire to run his hand from her waist to her thigh, exploring that sweeping curve of hip as he buried his face in the smooth warmth of her neck. She turned back to him and caught him staring. “You still here?”

He shook himself. “I was thinking,” he said, hoping his cheeks weren’t red. He watched intently as she poured streams from two bottles into a glass of ice. Her teeth tugged at her lower lip as she dumped the contents of the glass into a silver container, shook it vigorously, then dumped it back into the glass. After adding a wedge of lemon to the edge and dropping a cherry into the glass, she pushed it across the bar to him. “What’s this?”

“This is a Tom Collins,” she said. “It’s a solid drink. You’ll like it. If not, we’ll keep trying.”

He accepted it. “What do I owe you?”

“It’s on the house,” she said.

“Why?”

She propped a hand on her hip. “If the bartender gives you free drinks, you don’t ask why. You smile and say thank you.” Her tone was teasing, not angry.

Emboldened by her coy smile, he leaned closer. Her eyes were mesmerizing, a shade of green with a hint of gold that made him think of leaves just about to turn. “Then I will simply say thank you. The bartender has my highest regards.”

Excerpt

The ride over to Cyrius Eats didn’t take long. As she sat on the passenger side of the SUV, she took in the sights she’d not been able to see under cover of darkness. It was still early, and as the car drove towards the destination, Onessa watched as life in the bayou crawled at a slow pace. Mist clung to the surface of the dark, murky water. A blanket of white hovered over the still depths. Darkened tree trunks rooted to the bottom of the swamp reached as high as their rotting limbs would allow as moss hung on for dear life. Her pulse sped up as she noticed something slicing its way just beneath the surface, displacing the white curtain floating just above. When two eyes appeared, she held in her grasp and turned to face front. The road was empty as they drove along in silence. She’d been going in the right direction, and if it hadn’t been for the wolves, she’d have made it. She’d start by apologizing for her tardiness and tell him she was ready to learn. When they pulled up to the restaurant, Alaric jumped out of the car and opened her door.

“Go in through the door, and head back through the kitchen. The office is the second door on your right. I’ll grab your bags.”

Onessa followed his instructions. When she reached the office, the door was open. There was someone already there. Someone obviously male. His back faced her, and the distinct smell of hard liquor scented the air. When he turned around, her breath left her. She’d been expecting a Gerard Depardieu-looking kind of mentor. Not the Incredible Hunk.

Delia and The Werewolf Excerpt

All around Delia vampires, werewolves, and demons mingled with unaware humans. Several booths lining the far walls were packed with laughing groups. On the dance floor bodies jumped and swayed to the music.

No one seemed to notice they took their lives in their hands by associating with this crowd. But Delia knew. She recognized every Other as being different.

The Others all held a certain charisma that no human could maintain and most couldn’t resist. She resisted. Much to his surprise she’d refused him.

He was tempting. Tall, handsome, smart. He was cunning and he didn’t quit. Delia wasn’t sure if that was the part she admired most or if seeing the wild animal deep within his eyes flare at her refusal to sell her land had given her a thrill.

Was it the roughness of his handshake, the hard callouses pressed against her palm, or simply his imposing size?

She smiled to herself at the memory of his surprise when she called him out. She’d heard the stories of the Others. She guessed him a wolf from the moment he strode into her office.

The sheer power of his body. His immediate claim on any space he inhabited. An air about him so charged, so ready to strike he practically growled when he spoke.

She called him out again today, and he hated it.

“Not hiding it very well,” she’d said, knowing she was poking the wolf.

“Not trying.” He leaned over her desk, knuckles pressed into the wood. “A wager.” He leaned close, leaving merely a few inches between them, and inhaled along the side of her face. “Give me one shot to convince you to sell. A little competition. Mano a mano. If I can’t change your mind, I won’t ask again.”

The exhale of his breath against her hair sent a shiver through her body. Delia knew at that moment this would be a dangerous game.

Sitting back to look up at him, she laughed. “You realize you have the upper hand in a hand-to-hand competition. What are you, six-four?”

He grinned. “Six-six. But if you keep smiling at me like that, I won’t be able to think straight. You could come out on top.”

“Fine. What will it be? Arm wrestling? A round in a boxing ring? Maybe a game of chess?” She extended her hand and smiled her most dazzling smile.

His massive hand closed around hers, his smile never fading, and he shook his head. “Drinks. Tonight. Seductions. Eleven-thirty.”

Her mouth dropped open. “What? You said a hand-to-hand competition, not a date.” She released her grasp and tried to withdraw her hand.

He pulled her to her feet and leaned over the desk. His lips brushed her ear. “I did, and it will be. We’ll see who’s got the better hand moves.” His nose trailed over her skin as he inhaled. “Mmm. Don’t be late.”

Remember, I’m not the expert. But I decided to bring this question to the table among trusted peers, and these are our answers.  By trusted peers, I mean the ones in my head. *Hey* Characters have opinions too.

  •  The sire bond and how one vampire makes another.
    • The sire bond can be a real thing, and it can also be broken, especially if there is a traumatic episode. As far as making one another, well, yeah, that happens, like all the time.
  • They are hotter than hell.
    • Yes and no. There are some unsavory types. And beauty can be on the outside and they could be ugly on the inside right? I know some of those types of vampires.
  • Strong?
    • Of course, they are. They can lift quadruple their weight if not more right?
  • Offspring?
    • Well, there are a couple of possibilities. In Van Helsing (Hugh Jackman version) Dracula was trying his best to have offspring, but it didn’t work out so well. Edward and Bella managed to make little Esme, and in some stories, they can most definitely produce offspring.
  • Do they ever wish for a true and final death?
    • Maybe, are there some suicidal vamps roaming around out there? Probably. Or they go insane, right?
  • They are immortal.
    • I think this is also up for debate. As I know some real life vampires that want to suck the life from my very existence. Unless of course they are immortal and I never knew. (Gees, lets hope not.)

In the first book, Hart set up her world where five men, declared dead to the world at large, work for a super-secret anti-terrorism force. Hart’s new heroine is a very talented romance writer who takes no crap from anyone — even secret commandos. Miller and Elias are both funny and sexy together, which helps make this book nonstop entertainment, with plenty of witty bantering and thrilling adventure!”—RT 4 ½ star TOP PICK Review

“Modern Cliterature…Enjoy [this] lusty [passage] adapted from summer’s raciest reads…”Cosmopolitan, July 2017

Praise for The Darkest Corner, Book 1:

“Gritty, deadly, and peppered with unexpected humor, this supersexy, adrenaline-charged story will keep readers on edge and breathless until the last page.”—Library Journal

“Liliana Hart sets up a fascinating and intriguing premise of individual men forced into taking extreme steps. Her heroine’s reluctant immersion into this world allows readers to discover the treachery and danger looming all around…a thrilling series!”—RT

“A cool blend of entertaining antics and suspenseful moments, with a slightly morbid sense of humor thrown in for good measure. (Our heroine was a mortician, after all!) I had a blast getting to know this cast of characters and can’t wait to see what exciting things Liliana Hart has in store for us next.”—Harlequin Junkie

 About the book:

New York Times and USA TODAY bestselling author Liliana Hart’s second book in her sexy, suspenseful Gravediggers series, GONE TO DUST, features an elite group of mysterious men who might be dead to the world, but are also tasked with saving it—and no one can ever know.

The Gravediggers aren’t exactly what they seem. They’re the most elite of the world’s fighting forces—and all they have in common is that they’ve been betrayed by the countries they’ve died for. Because they are dead. To their country, their military, and their families. Sometimes the dead do rise…

Miller Darling is one of the most popular romance novelists of her time. Not bad for a woman who doesn’t believe in romance. She’s as logical as they come, and she doesn’t believe in happily-ever-afters. What she does believe in is family, so when her brother disappears, she doesn’t think twice about packing her bag and her laptop and heading out to find him.

Elias Cole lived and breathed the live of a Navy SEAL. Now he’s “dead” and his hero’s honor tarnished. The only thing keeping him sane are the men who are like him—The Gravediggers—and the woman who makes his head spin. He’s never met anyone like Miller Darling. Her smart mouth and quick wit keep him on his toes, and damned if he doesn’t find that appealing.

When Miller receives a package from the brother who abandoned her asking for help, it’s clear she’s in over her head with the mess he’s gotten himself into. She needs a professional, and Elias is just the man for the job. Only her brother is a former SEAL—the man who left his team to die—and Elias is more interested in vengeance than saving his life.

QUICKIE REVIEW

I personally enjoyed the characters in the book, Miller and Elias’ banter was hilarious. Their chemistry scorching, and I couldn’t put the book down! It was sexy and packed with adventure. I’ve not had a chance to read the first book, and I don’t think I missed out on anything, except for an amazing story. (I’ve remedied that, by buying the first book in the series). But you can definitely follow along and get the gist as you get a bit of backstory from how the gravediggers were born. I’m invested in the series and can’t wait to see who the others fall for! Bravo! Excellent read!

Who would win in a fight? A Werepanther or Werewolf?

Who would win in a fight? A Werepanther or Werewolf?

Werepanther

Attributes to consider

  • Agility
  • Size
  • Jungle Terrain *Air is thicker in the jungle, due to humidity*
  • Salvia is toxic
  • Four legs vs. Bipedal
  • Classes of Panther (Panthera)
    • Tigrer
    • Lion
    • Jaguar
    • Leopard
    • Snow Leopard

I could go a lot deeper in their Pantera class, but for the sake of time, I won’t do that.

vs.

Werewolf

Attributes to consider

  • Strength
  • Size
  • Woodland Terrain
  • Salvia is toxic
  • Claws are toxic
  • Four legs vs. Bipedal
  • Classes of Wolf (Canidae)
    • Gray Wolf
    • Coyote
    • African Golden Wolf
    • Ethiopian Wolf
    • Jackal
    • Black Beard Jackal
  • Alpha
  • Beta
  • Omega

Again, this is just the wolf class is broken down. There are tons I’m leaving out, but for the sake of shifting, I’m going to go with this class of wolf.

It hopefully has you thinking who would win in a fight right? Let’s revisit in two weeks. But for now, pick a side, and let’s hope it’s the winning side! Those who comment on the blog will be entered to win either a Panther or Wolf, depending on who our victor is!

You could win a Panther or a Wolf! Pick a side and see who wins!

#MeetCute Interview: Tawdra Kandle 50 Frogs

Boy meets girl. It’s the way romances usually begin . . . and while we all love a happy ending, it’s the #MeetCute that wins our hearts.
How did you two meet?
The #MeetCute Books each have a unique answer to that query. Some might make you swoon, others might make you giggle . . . and some may make you blush.
Twelve authors. Twelve stand-alone contemporary romance novels. Twelve stories that will make your heart beat a little faster.
Because it’s all about the #MeetCute.
For each #MeetCute Book, we’ll share a couples interview in the style of the “When Harry Met Sally” clips. (Check them out here!)
In FIFTY FROGS, Vivian kisses some frogs . . . but there’s only one guy who captures her heart.
Vivian: The first time we met, it was in the middle of a street, and I was forced out of the car against my will.
Charlie: Let’s just be clear here: it wasn’t me doing the forcing.
Vivian (laughing): No, that’s true. It wasn’t. That was my mom and Aunt Gail.
Charlie: Remind me to thank them for that.
Vivian: Anyway . . . (mock glares at Charlie), when I saw you the first time, I thought you were cute.
Charlie: Tell the truth. You thought I was smoking hot, standing there, holding my rake. And when the turtle got involved, I was damn near irresistible.
Vivian: Right. Only, I did resist you.
Charlie: For a long time. While you were busy doing other things. <clears throat> It took a while and some help before you finally gave into my charms.
Vivian: Okay, so what did you think when you first saw me?
Charlie: I thought you were incredible, beautiful and full of passion. I also thought you had a nice ass.
Vivian: Are you talking about the day we met in the street? That wasn’t my best day. I can’t believe that’s what your first impression was. Also, did you even see my ass that day?
Charlie: I mean the first day I saw you. And yeah, checking out your ass is always a top priority for me. Always was . . . always will be.
Vivian: Awww, you say the sweetest things!
Charlie: I only ever speak the truth, babe. That’s a forever thing. Just like us.

Fifty Frogs releases on June 27th. You can preorder it here today!

Vivian is sick of dating. Sick of the way guys treat her, sick of living and crying by when and if they call . . . she’s just done.

When her aunt reminds her that a girl has to kiss a lot of frogs before she finds her prince–Aunt Gail says that number is fifty–Vivian decides she’s taking control of her dating life: she’s going to go on a series of first dates only, and each one must end in a kiss. She begins chronicling each date–the good, the bad and the downright unbelievable–with a plan to turn the stories into an in-depth magazine series about the realities of dating in the twenty-first century.

Everything’s going along according to plan until Vivian hits a bump in her road with Frog Number Five, who doesn’t seem to understand his role in this deal. And despite Vivian’s determination to make it all the way to the big five-oh, when fate keeps throwing this same man across her path, she begins to wonder if maybe it’s time to ditch the plan . . . and kiss just one more frog.

5 Myths about the Alpha Male

5 Myths about the Alpha Male

I was online a couple of weeks back doing some research on Alpha Males and found there are some misconceptions. I’m no expert, but I’d like to think I know a little about them.  I married one. First I want to point out that there’s a book called. The Book of Alpha It’s called to action states… Be Bold. Take Control of Your Life. If you read this book this is what you’ll learn.

Alpha vs. Beta Males

Why you are who you are

Alpha Male Body Language

Become Fearless

Leadership Skills

Quality of Life

via GIPHY

Let’s first jump into some characteristics of the Alpha male.

Definition:  Is the first letter of the Greek Alphabet. In the system of Greek numerical, it has a value of 1. According to the Oxford Dictionary, it’s the dominant male in a particular group.

If you’re not first you’re last” ~Ricky Bobby’s Daddy

I did some digging, and first looked up some Alpha Male traits, and since I found the book The Book of Alpha, I figured I’d pull from their list.

via GIPHY

  1. Confident
  2. Have Intangibles (Mentally Tough)
  3. Competitive
  4. Have presence
  5. Strong Body Language
  6. Walk like the shit <— ( I don’t entirely get this one? ) Maybe they have swagger? *Yup that’s what it means*
  7. Position Themselves
  8. Dominant
  9. Take Chances
  10. Alpha Males Get the Girl
  11. Vocal and Loud (I’m tagging this one as a Myth because some Alpha males (at least the ones I’ve met) Are more observant than vocal and loud.
  12. Strong Eye Contact
  13. Aren’t Afraid to get physical (tagging this one too) I don’t think fear has anything to do with it. Again, knowing when the battle is necessary. *Again, I’m not the expert.
  14. Calm under Pressure
  15.  Know how to dress
  16. Strong
  17. Non-Reactive
  18. Do not need external validation
  19. Not afraid to stand out
  20. Saying No (tagging this one too as Myth)
  21. Do not try to be everyone’s friend
  22. Perseverance

I want to revisit this list in another post! And I will… But this list came from tobealpha.com tobealpha.com/alpha-male-characteristics/

Now let’s get into the Myths of the Alpha Male, and I found a couple above. But you don’t have to take my word for it. These are just my thoughts.

5 Myths about the Alpha Male *According to Tigris*

  • Vocal and Loud: I don’t think this is true, some are the strong silent type. They observe, get the lay of the situation before being vocal and loud.
  • Attractive (Physically) We all want that buff dude, with the washboard abs, and the sparkling eyes and long lashes, but let’s face it, being an Alpha Male is a state of mind I think. The mind is a beautiful place and is just as attractive. So although the Alpha in question isn’t eye candy, he can still exude power in other areas and still be just as influential.
  • Assholes: Some can be, but it’s not a pre-requisite to in order to get your A Card.
  • Are secretly shifters and vampires who are waiting to fulfill our every fantasy. I know, we want this. Crave it even, but unless you know something I don’t know, then we can only read about them in our favorite books.
  • Saying No. Okay, I tagged this one, because what does saying no have to do with being Alpha? I don’t get it. In the article, the writer points out that Alpha males have the power to say no and that betas are afraid of the consequences of saying no. It also says that having said power to say no, is the most important thing. I disagree and I’m calling MYTH on this. Because everyone has the power to say no, Alpha’s included and as far as consequences, I think an Alpha would consider the consequences be it good or bad. Cause he’s an Alpha and would use his head first to get to the correct outcome? (Am I overreaching?) If I am, call me out on it!

Power is her greatest weakness, but love could be her salvation.

Dana Hutson is about to make one of the toughest decisions of her life: walking away from her twin and her Pack. But the anger of her late mate’s betrayal burns deep, and her guilt threatens to push her over the edge. Combined with the magic she was born with intensifying to a lethal level, she has no choice but to leave Whiskey Hollow in search of her inner peace. But what she finds could be more than she bargained for.

Cooper Reed will do anything to keep his sister and adopted daughter safe from the demented rogue Alpha of the Bloodrose Creek Pack. That includes killing anyone who threatens his family and going on the run. He is willing to do whatever it takes. He isn’t prepared to find his mate in the midst of the chaos.

When even more secrets and dangers come to light, Dana and Cooper must band together to stop the rogue and his minions before all is lost. But will their bond be enough to harness the power needed to defeat such a foe?

Pain arched across her skull, piercing every nerve ending. Dana growled, holding her head in her hands. With deep, calming breaths, she gathered the built-up magic that ran in her veins, the power that grew stronger every day.

Dreams of destruction and loss had interrupted her sleep over the last month. With only a few hours of rest a day, she feared the control she tried desperately to maintain would slip. She could kill her brother, then the Pack.

Ross did this to us. Her wolf’s words cut through the hammering ache in her skull.

Ross wasn’t their true mate. The mating had been a political arrangement between his Pack and hers, to merge two small groups of wolves together. The first few years had been good, and she’d actually believed she could grow to love him. She’d trusted him to be the strong Alpha that her father was.

However, when the Alpha power transferred to Ross from her father, everything changed. As Ross’s mate, the Pack magic mixed with the power Dana been born with. The power the witch’s Coven, her great-aunt’s Coven, believed was a gift from the goddess, Diana.

Ross became drunk on the magic and wanted more. He went from a compassionate wolf to a power-hungry, abusive mate. He distorted her Pack, and broke her in ways she wasn’t sure could be fixed.

She’d learned to hide the witch’s power from him, containing it deep within her soul. But that power had only grown, and now, it wanted out.

“You don’t have to go.”

Dana squeezed her eyes shut and willed away the ache in her head and her chest. Her twin brother’s soft plea hurt on so many levels. In all of their hundred years of life, they’d never been separated. Never needed to be. They were linked through a familial bond, as well as psychically.

Since Darin had taken over Whiskey Hollow as the Pack Alpha, his power was now hers. And her agony was his. She couldn’t stay, knowing that she caused him pain and may one day hurt him physically. “Dare, we both know I can’t stay. Our link is too strong, and I’m not sure how much longer I can hold my wolf back from challenging you. She grows more aggressive as the poison inside me grows. A healthy Pack can’t survive with two Alphas.”

“You are not poisoned. I took Ross’s Alpha power when I killed him.” Darin stepped closer, his hand extended to her.

Involuntarily, Dana growled and jerked back. “Don’t touch me!”

He let out a soft sigh and lowered his hand. Disappointment and sadness flowed along the link that bound them as twins. Dana hugged her waist. She wanted nothing more than to embrace her brother and believe that everything would be okay. But she couldn’t.

“Where will you go?”

Dana shrugged. “Not sure. North, maybe.”

Darin shoved his hands into his pockets. “I can call a few Packs and ask if you can stay in their territory.”

She sighed and shook her head. “I’m not going to put any other Pack in jeopardy. I know where the neutral zones are, and I plan to stay within them.”

The truth was, she had a place about twenty miles west of Whiskey Hollow. However, she didn’t want to tell her brother that was where she planned to go. Although, he’d find her anyway. And he would, just to keep tabs on her.

She needed the time to get control of her wolf and the growing power within her.

“Take an enforcer with you.”

Dana whirled on her twin and snarled. “I am not taking anyone with me. I’m not helpless, and I don’t need a fucking babysitter.”

His wolf flashed in his blue eyes, and he curled his upper lip. “I know you don’t need a babysitter, but shit happens.”

She strode to him, placed a hand on the center of his chest, and felt the beating of his heart through the thin cotton T-shirt he wore. Instantly, she calmed. That was Darin’s gift as a charmed one—a shifter with magic in their bloodline. “The time has come where I need to search for my own Pack.”

There, she’d said it. Up until then, she’d let her brother believe that her leaving was temporary, that she’d return. However, she didn’t plan on coming back. “Look. You may be fine with lying to yourself, but I have to face reality. The Alpha blood runs thick in my veins, just as it does in yours. Being mated to Ross only added a shit ton of fuel to the fire.”

She stepped back and turned away from him. The unspoken words lingered between them. Her guilt for mating the former Alpha had further distorted the Pack and left her bitter. Especially after she’d watched the bastard kill her parents. When Darin had killed the asshole and claimed the Pack, Dana was no longer responsible for protecting it against her mate.

Yet, the hurt, the anger, and the power she’d gained from Ross had damaged something inside her. Had broken her on a level she hadn’t thought possible. She feared she’d go rogue, mindless and bloodthirsty.
