Tidbit Tuesday: A Slow Burn: Stories from Beauville

Welcome back to Beauville, where anything is possible.

Here is a snippet of how it all started. A snippet from A Slow Burn, book 1 in my Stories from Beauville Series.

“Annabelle.”

“Sheriff Storme.”

He smiled, and I swear my heart beat a little faster at the sight of his dimples. Joey and Treat were talking quietly amongst themselves leaving Jackson and me alone.

“City life too fast for you? My sister told me you’d moved back from New York.”

“Nah, just home for a while, taking a break. Joey didn’t tell me you were the sheriff. The badge looks good on you.”

Hell anything would look good on him, present company included.

He didn’t respond to my comment, just tipped his head forward again. That was one thing I didn’t really care for about southern boys; they were always so damned polite. However, I’d learned a few things while living in New York, and one of my most valuable lessons was to live in the moment. Snatch it up and run with it because who knew when opportunity was going to throw you down on a bed, hell the ground at my feet, and give it to me raw and dirty like I knew Jackson could.

“How long are you going to be in Beauville?”

“Depends.”

I wasn’t going to beat around the bush. I know when a man wants me.

“On what, Annabelle,” my name was like gravel in his mouth. Like he was having a hard time talking to me, or maybe he was annoyed that I hadn’t given him a flat out answer. But damn his voice was darker, the drawl that all southern men came standard with became slower, affecting that place between my thighs I so badly wanted to introduce him to.

“On you, sugar.”

I watched as Jackson’s pupils dilated and his nostrils flared. I could flirt with the best of them and not even bat an eyelash. I knew I wanted him. I wanted him something fierce, and had for as long as I could remember.

“You taunting me, Annabelle?”

He took a step forward making me look up into his heated gaze. This conversation had taken a different kind of turn. I expected Jackson to be shocked, maybe even a little hesitant. But our harmless flirtation had become something altogether different, something sexy. Dare I call it foreplay?

Normally, I needed to be touched, coaxed into the horizontal mambo, but Jackson Storme could make me come in zero to ten, I was one hundred and fifty percent positive we were eye-fucking right out in the open for all to see. The man threw off animal magnetism in large doses. Someone needed to bottle his scent, which had somehow over powered my senses, and sell it at top dollar, he was that intoxicating. It was a combination of virile man and hot summer mornings that slowly heated, until finally by mid-afternoon you were dying of thirst, because it was too hot.

“Jackson Storme,” I smiled sweetly using my own southern drawl and said, “I would never-ever think to do such a thing.” I batted my lashes and turned in the direction of Joey and Treat, thinking I could get away. The plan was to have him eating out of the palm of my hand by the end of the day. But he only let me make it five steps before grabbing my arm and turning me around to face him. The skin on skin contact had my breath hitching and my eyes widening in apprehension. Maybe I wasn’t ready for Sheriff Jackson Storme. His face was hard as he peered down at me and frown lines began to form around the corners of his mouth as he pulled me closer to whisper into my ear.

“Ms. Macon, do have a care in how you tempt me. I’m not like those little boys in the city. You can’t and won’t control me, honey.”

“Our son’s name will be Xavier Alexander Cavanaugh,” Treat announces.

We clap and cheer, and before we dig in to eat, little Ava decides she too has something to say. We all look her way as she clears her throat and in a very clear and serious voice says, “Daddy is marrying Honey Mom, and I will be the flower princess, so when Savior comes, he can walk with me.”

We all laugh at how she says Xavier’s name. It sounds like savior.

“Well, what if I want to walk you down the aisle, precious,” Finn says, smiling over at Ava. She looks at me as if asking for permission.

“Honey Mom, can Finn walk me and Savior?”

I grin.

“Sure.”

“Kay, I’m hungry, I want to eat the chocolate chip cake we made.”

“After dinner. Right now, we’re eating this.”

My maternal instincts haven’t exactly kicked in, but I see the beginnings of tears shine in Ava’s beautiful eyes.

“I don’t like it,” Ava whines.

“You haven’t even tried it,” I say back. She’s never done this before, but JoJo, who has kids of her own, did warn me. Little Ava is testing her boundaries.

“I don’t want to try it.” She’s in full pout mode, and Jackson looks at me. I can tell he’s about to give in. I shake my head at him. He better not go there.

“You mean to tell me, you don’t like dragon meat?” Sawyer tosses out.

“Dragon meat?” Ava says slowly.

“Yeah,” Finn agrees. “Dragon meat, complete with tree arms and red taters. Anna even made moons berry bread. All the princesses and faeries eat this.”

Ava’s eyes go big. The twins really know how to work it. I need to take a page from their book.

“Really?” Ava is starting to get excited.

“Yeah, really, and the cookie cake we made is a recipe I got from Princess Elsa,” I say, in hopes she’ll agree.

“Oh, yes, I remember now, ‘cause, you’re Elsa’s sister. Right, Honey Mom?”

Everyone stares. I get it. I’m not Anna from Frozen, and in little Ava’s head, she knows, too, but we’ve watched Frozen a million times.

“You mean to tell me; I’m marrying the Princess Anna?” Jackson jokes.

“Yes, Daddy, you stole her from Kristoff because he and Olaf are on a secret quest to find the Easter Bunny.”

Ava is deadly serious. We’ve had many conversations surrounding the secret quest. Indi is smiling, trying her best not to laugh, and Jackson and the rest of the men at the table are clueless. Jackson’s watched Frozen once, maybe twice. I’ve been subjected to Frozen nearly every day. I have to make the movie interesting.

“Well, I guess I’d better take extra care with our Princess Anna.”

Ava nods her head sharply before looking down at her plate. She looks up to Finn and Sawyer and whispers, “Is this really dragon meat?”

Both brothers nod their heads, and we watch as Ava sets in to eat her dinner.

Tidbit Tuesday: Until Her Snippet

He was going to consume Annabelle Macon, soon-to-be-Storme. But first, he just wanted to look at her. Jackson’s hands framed her face and he watched breathlessly as she closed her eyes and tilted her head back, exposing the beautiful column of her throat. Such a delicate, small throat, Jackson thought. He eased forward and nuzzled the skin there, making her groan. He kissed his way to the underside of her jaw, then up again, moving to the corner of her mouth. It was a ghost of a kiss meant to entice. Anna leaned up on her toes and latched onto his mouth, taking control.

“Then what?” I ask.

“Then I come home, marry my girl, get her fat with my kids, keep her fat so only I want her, and live out my days as the happiest man in Beauville.”

“Jackson, your dream is a bit skewed. I won’t be getting fat with your kids and staying that way, and certainly not pregnant all the time.”

“We’ll see about that.”

“I’m not pushing out a football team.”

“Only asking for a basketball squad.” This time, he does laugh, and I can’t help but laugh, too.

“You’re crazy.”

“Yeah, for you.”

I can feel softness. Warmth. Everything around me is calm. I think I can even hear music, but I’m not sure. There is some sort of wild cry in the background. I want to open my own eyes and see what’s making those noises, but my eyes are heavy. Too heavy. The sound gets louder, closer. I’m not scared. Somehow, I know I’m safe. Something feather-soft tickles my face, then down my arm and over my leg. This happens several times. Each stroke lulls me. Pulls me toward a place I know I need to go, but am too afraid to go back to. What if everything changes? What if they’ve all moved on? What if he’s moved on? Who is he, and why can’t I remember his name? How long have I been here?
