The best protection any woman can have … is courage—Elizabeth Cady Stanton

Elizabeth Cady Stanton was a contemporary of Susan B. Anthony, and although less well-known, she still has a lot to say to modern women.

This quote resonates with me, especially because I am scared of everything.  I’m not an adrenaline junkie, storms terrify me, and if I could wrap my car in bubble wrap for all forays out of the house, I’d be much happier.

However, that just won’t do.

Life is about taking chances, especially in my chosen career—writing and publishing.  While I can happily live my life never getting on another airplane or motorcycle, I can’t not write.

And that requires courage of a different sort.

Good writing involves putting the characters in situations where they will grow. Finding some hidden truth inside themselves.  Not only that, but it’s necessary to take risks with plot and conflict, and that can be scary as an author.  The heroine is already in trouble?  Let’s throw something else in the mix to make it worse!  Depending on the trouble and the wrenches we throw into the mix, the characters we have birthed will suffer much more at our hands.  As much as we laugh and joke about that, it’s still guilt-inducing for me.  And readers get angry.  That’s a risk we have to take.

The entire act of indie publishing is a brave thing, as well.  I’ve already been rejected by the publishing houses who are supposed to know everything, right?  When I first began this journey, I felt like I was going over their head, so to speak, and publishing anyway, after they’d essentially told me I wasn’t worth it.  That’s ballsy too.

It took courage.  Courage I didn’t have.

And throughout this process, I have learned so much about myself.  I’ve learned I can truly do anything I set my mind to, something I assumed my parents just told me to make me feel better.  I’ve learned I can support my family through creative efforts.  I’ve learned I CAN touch people’s lives and make them better.  I’ve learned how to push through my failures.

And these things have made me even stronger.  And in that strength, I am protected by my courage to take risks.  Risks with my characters, the situations they find themselves in, and the other characters who help them discover their own inner strength.

So I project my insecurities on my characters in different ways—either by making them fraidy cats, like myself, or the fearless woman I wish I was.

And it’s cathartic in a way I can’t even explain.  But through this journey of writing and exploring different characters’ faults and foibles and helping them grow, I have found myself.

And I am a strong woman.

And so are you.  Just find your courage, and you’ll be protected.

The death of Oakley’s sister has left his family broken and buried beneath their grief. In an attempt to get out from underneath their pain, they rent an isolated cottage in the Cotswolds. For Oakley, it’s an exercise in futility. He doesn’t see much hope for things to get back to the way they used to be, and he’s bored and restless as he waits out the time until he can return to the city and university. All of that changes when he meets local boy Bobby, and the connection between them is instant. Within a few days, Oakley is ready to walk away from everything to stay with Bobby. However, Bobby has problems of his own, and they might be more than the budding romance can survive. But they might also give Oakley a new perspective on his own situation.

Summer passed England by that year, as if it shared his family’s grief and refused to intrude upon such solemn days with unwanted sunshine. A cool, wet July turned into a blustery August, and now a dismal September loomed. From the window of their rented cottage, there was nothing but gray skies as far as the eye could see. The fields spread out in a patchwork of shortbread and moss. Plentiful rain meant the grass stood tall, but the lack of light filtering through thick, heavy clouds dulled its various shades of green. And this bleak scene was supposed to make everything better?

Oakley sighed and turned to the sink. He poured himself a glass of water from a spluttering, corroded tap and took a sip. Despite the dubious appearance of the fittings, the water was clean, tasteless, and refreshing. He supposed he should at least be thankful for that. It was likely to be the only pleasant thing this vacation would provide.

When I was asked to do a post for Fearless Female Friday the first character who came to mind was Storm. She was my first introduction to a fierce female character who loved as hard as she fought. Intelligent, brave, and kind, she embodied all the things I wished I could be. Her kick ass white hair, and bodacious body didn’t hurt matters either. Yes, I said bodacious. I had to take you back to the 90’s so you could feel the full effect of my awe. *winks.  The fact that she was one of the first African-American Marvel characters in a time when that wasn’t done added to the lengthy list of things I admire about her.

To me being fearless means being true to yourself regardless of trends, the opinions of others, and your fears. I think Storm embodies that.

Lindsey Jarvis, Las Vegas Metro PD undercover cop from BRONCO’S ROUGH RIDE.

When Ms. Eden offered me the opportunity to be on her Fearless Female Friday spot, the first heroine in my books that I thought of was Lindsey Jarvis, undercover detective in Bronco’s Rough Ride. Lindsey has been playing Jenna Black, the Black Widow of Las Vegas to infiltrate a reverse sex ring. Where men are victims and women hold the upper hand by drugging them. Lindsey has been trying to make it to he inner circle and get her own “toy” for two years. When Navy SEAL Chief Petty Officer John Andrews becomes one of the latest victims, she knows she has to get him out before the Ketamine shuts down his system. In this snippet, we’re in John’s POV, but it is their escape attempt, out through the Man Cave Club, and they meet one of the other clients of the sex ring.

For me, being a Fearless Female isn’t about physical strength, though Lindsey has that, or even having no fear at all, because Lindsey is scared, she just chooses to keep going no matter what. What makes her so special is she’s willing to go to great lengths to save a man she barely knows because she is determined, she is courageous, and she won’t give up. That to me is the most fearless female ever.

Excerpt of Bronco’s Rough Ride
“Good boy.” Lindsey turned her gaze back to the woman in red. “Where’s your toy, Lady Katy?”
The other woman shrugged with a negligent toss of her head. “Oh, it expired recently. I’m waiting for a new replacement.” Her gaze fixed on John and she licked her lips, her eyes full of avarice. “Do let me know how this one works out for you. I might want to take him for a spin if there’s anything left when you’re done.”
Lindsey’s laughed chilled John to the bone. “You know I don’t leave leftovers. I use every. Last. Drop.” She punctuated each word with her hand groping some part of his body until she gently squeezed his balls. He groaned as she gave her hand a vicious twist and bent over to hide her lack of real purchase. Thank God she didn’t really rip them off.
Lady Katy squealed with delight. “Oh, he’s marvelously responsive. I miss that about the toys, but one can’t be too careful.” She waved a hand in John’s direction. “Where are you taking him?”
Strobe lights flashed as their immediate silence stretched beneath the thumping music of the Club. Lindsey kept her gaze on John as if considering the next step in a diabolical plan. Her smile came slow and sultry, but cold, and John shivered despite himself.
“I want to go see the fountains and be kissed under the lights before taking him to bed.”
“Aww, how romantic. I never knew you had it in you, Ms. Black.”
“Yes, well, I have to keep a few secrets, don’t I?” Lindsey nodded to Lady Katy. “I’d best get to it before he’s too drunk to stand. Don’t want to require someone to carry him for me. Good luck with your new toy.” Lindsey tugged John’s tie as she shifted toward the crowd of dancers. “Come along, Mr. Smith. That’s a good boy.”
John staggered after her, his back itching from the gaze of Lady Katy. Damn, that woman needed to be put down like a rabid weasel. And I’d do it if my hands were steady enough.
Some of his strength had returned as the effects of the drug wore off, but he still remained unsteady and they didn’t have much time. The orderlies would be back soon to administer the next dose of drugs and they’d sound the alarm when they found him and Lindsey gone. She must have sensed his unease because she grabbed his hand to pull him closer. He bent his head to her ear and inhaled her lovely scent.
“Which way is out from here?” He had a tough time focusing on anything in the undulating crowd splashed with strobe lighting.
“To your left.” He swung them around and eyed her direction. “Under the red light. They try to make it look like there’s blood everywhere to keep people from leaving when they’re drunk. It’s a visceral reaction from what I’ve seen.”
“Hell, that’s diabolical.” John swallowed against his stomach trying to heave up bile. The tile patterns on the floor seemed to shift like moving entrails in the crimson light. Just keep your eyes on the prize, Chief. “Let’s move out.”
“Roger that.”
John blinked and shot her a look, but Lindsey pasted a false smile over her lips and beckoned him with a curling finger as she pulled him toward the doors. Bodies jostled them and made their progress torturous under the shifting lights. John tried to keep moving in a straight line, but his eyes refused to focus and he staggered to his knees, dragging Lindsey down with him.
Aw shit.
Lindsey giggled as if completely drunk and bent at the waist, laughing helplessly as she removed her shoes. “Oh my God, you’re so drunk.” She chortled as she tugged on him. “I gotta get you home, lover.”
When John looked up no smile graced her lips and she tensed when a bouncer looked down over her shoulder.
“Everything all right here, miss?”
Lindsey reeled back, rotating her head to an impossible angle. “Hi! Aren’t you cute? I’m fine. I’m just trying to help Johnny Boy out the door. He’s so drunk.” She wobbled and waved her stripper heels in John’s direction, smacking him on the shoulder. “Oops, sorry.”
“Hey, watch it.” His voice came out slurred just as he’d hoped.
The bouncer glowered. “C’mon, buddy. We’ll get you out.”
John weakly shoved him off and grasped Lindsey’s elbow. “I don’t need no help. I can walk on my own.” He took a few wobbling steps toward the door, dragging Lindsey along with him. She giggled again, but tension tightened her shoulders.
“I’ll just help you to your car.”
“That’s okay. We’re staying close by.” She leaned in close to the bouncer and gave him a bawdy wink. “I’m gonna show him how a real woman likes it.” She hiccoughed and swayed, but kept her feet. “C’mon, Johnny Boy, you promised to show me a good time.”
“Yeah, you know I will.”
The bouncer hesitated and John’s gut tightened, but he smiled his best leer and grabbed Lindsey’s ass, squeezing. She squealed and staggered closer to the entrance. The display of drunken love must have convinced the bigger man because he pushed through the crowd to the door and let them out into the heated night.

What happens in Vegas, stays in the heart…
Chief Petty Officer John “Bronco” Andrews only meant to stay one night in Vegas for a little R&R before resuming his duties as a US Navy SEAL in Coronado. But someone slips him a mickey in the bar and he finds himself in Madame LeBeau’s sex trade. As the product. Doped up on ketamine to keep him docile, Bronco has no choice but to let it ride.
Detective Lindsey Jarvis has been undercover in LeBeau’s sex slave racket for two years and she almost has enough evidence to take it down. Between abduction, prostitution, and murder, she has LeBeau by the short hairs. All she needs is a “product”. John is the perfect witness if she can get him out before the drugs shut down his heart. Then she’ll be free to start a normal life.
Lindsey doesn’t count on her overwhelming attraction for Bronco or her need to see him through detox. But she’s a cop in Vegas and he’s a Navy SEAL, two lifestyles with too much unpredictability to maintain a relationship. Neither have time for more than one wild rough ride, and what happens in Vegas, stays. Forever.
Siobhan Muir lives in Cheyenne, Wyoming, with her husband, two daughters, and a vegetarian cat she swears is a shape-shifter, though he’s never shifted when she can see him. Cover Reveal: Ex-Retreat by Elise Hepner

Warning: This book contains a geeky, secretly insecure but overly cocky handy-man with a penchant for pleasing, a dominatrix in training who’s on the rebound, and enough smut to strip a couple layers off your soul. Plus there’s mac n’ cheese with a smattering of self-actualization for good measure.

After Chloe Barrons’ fiancé cheats on her via webcam, she begrudgingly accepts her Type-A mother’s offer of a spur of the moment luxury spa weekend. But things don’t play out quite from point A to point B when she arrives drunk and disoriented on the front porch of a deserted North Carolina beach house. From the very start she’s caught off guard by Noah XXX, a sinfully sexy, self-proclaimed commitment-phobe who’s a handyman for his sister’s relationship rehabilitation center—a rehab where Chloe is the sole guest during off-season.

But faced with temptation, to stay guarded she’ll have to call the shots.

Noah Knightly shouldn’t have taken Chloe’s reservation. But in need of a second pair of hands to fix up the beach house, he throws all his sister’s rules out the window. Soon he worries that maybe he’s bitten off more than he can chew: each day Chloe cracks more of his cocky façade bringing down his guards to reveal a stuttering geek who has a hidden will to please her in any way possible.

With no way to ignore her pain, Noah sets himself up as a guniea pig to prove to Chloe that not all men are created equal—in or out of the bedroom. As Chloe comes into her own through every sexual session, Noah needs to decide if he’s man enough to accept the one thing he never thought he wanted—love.

Elise Hepner lives with two spastic cats and a very supportive, slightly crazy husband. There is never a dull moment in the house, unless the caffeine runs out, which it never does. She’s a multi-published erotica author with Cleis Press, Ellora’s Cave, Xcite, and Secret Cravings Publishing.

She’s driven by her tea addiction and a tiny stuffed turtle her husband picked up from Disney World that sits on her desk and “supervises” her work.

When not writing (which is rare), she’s watching countless hours of reality television, playing the Sims or shopping online. Plus there’s that odd obsession with the color purple. Everything is purple. Visit Elise at her website to keep up with her naughty ramblings, random tidbits and future work.

I have a newsletter where you can sign up for sneak peeks, contests, giveaways, new release news and other fun things:
